Hope isn’t given enough respect.
Because its presence often lies in the background of our consciousness, hope’s importance and impact in provider-patient relationship/communication is underappreciated And hope doesn’t just influence our patients and families, it affects us as providers as well.
Because of this, hope will be a recurring topic on my blog.
A few years ago, Professor Robert M Sapolsky, a neuroscientist at Stanford University and recipient of a MacArthur Foundation genius grant, wrote a powerful op-ed entitled “Hoping against hope: it’s a people thing”. It left a strong impression on me, and I give this article to all ‘learners’ I work with. It’s this week’s blog post all on its own; and I hope you will read it.
