sometimes recognition does come to those who are the most deserving.
During my time as a reconstructive surgeon, I had the privilege of taking my skills to rural areas around the world and serve people with limited access to health care services. The Democratic Republic of Congo was one of the places I worked. And there, I had the good fortune to meet with Dr Mukwege and visit Panzi Hospital- a true oasis of hope in a community full of challenges and horror. Although it has been over 6 years since my visit, his powerful presence and calm and caring demeanor remain embedded in my memory.
Dr Mukwege has worked tirelessly to help the women and the people of the DRC. And he has brought worldwide attention to the despicable use of rape as a means to afflict further terror on civilian populations caught in combat zones.
This work has not been without personal risk as he barely survived an assassination attempt a few years ago.
And he continues nonetheless…
