This article from NPR caught my attention:
Does taking time for compassion make doctors better at their jobs?
This is something I feel strongly about, and is really the impetus for this blog. My gut feeling is that helping providers improve their communications skills so they can really connect with patients helps BOTH patients and providers. So I was excited to see this on the NPR site.
Compassionomics
Drs Mazarelli and Trzeciak from Cooper University Health Care in Camden, N.J looked to answer the question: Can treating patients with medicine AND compassion make a measurable difference on the wellbeing of both patients and doctors?
Their exploration of the scientific literature came back with a resounding yes!
when providers take the time to make human connections that help end suffering, patient outcomes improve and medical costs decrease. Compassion also seems to prevent doctor burnout
Their book- Compassionomics: the revolutionary scientific evidence that caring makes a difference has just come out- and sounds like an important read.
